The healthcare industry is experiencing fundamental transformation moving from a volume-based business to a value-based business.
- In the face of demands from consumers for improved healthcare quality and increased value, healthcare providers are being pushed to deliver better outcomes.
- Personnel shortages require overworked professionals to be even more productive and efficient.
- The cost dynamics of healthcare are changing.
- people living longer
- the pervasiveness of chronic illnesses and infectious diseases
- increasing complexity and competition
To meet the changing environment healthcare organizations need to reduce costs, improve coordination and outcomes, provide more with less and become more patient centric
Health Care Data
Current health care IT initiatives seek to build a national health IT infrastructure that will provide a more comprehensive, patient-focused view of health related information.
Health information exchange (HIE) requires that electronic health record (EHR) systems be able to electronically communicate with a variety of health related entities. This will assure that patient data may be accessed, with proper authorization, without technical impediments. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) is responsible for setting the standards for national HIE. The federal government has provided grants to the states to build state HIEs.
According to the requirements for meaningful use, patient data must be submitted to public health agencies and be capable of being exchanged with other care providers and patient-authorized entities. HIPPA standards have been revised to accommodate the HIEs. These revisions include administrative safeguards, physical safeguards and technical safeguards.
Analytics competency can help these healthcare organizations harness “big data” to create actionable insights, set their future vision, improve outcomes and reduce time to value. Here is a roadmap to help get "big data" under control.

There are numerous IT companies positioned to help develop solutions for healthcare entities. We feature 2 of the large ones here.
